City Council Candidate Quaglione to call on DOT to Improve School Crossing markings

City Council Candidate for the 43rd District appeals to NYC Dept. of Transportation

Brooklyn, NY– A dangerous school crosswalk in a busy four-line avenue was the topic of overdue discussion today, led by City Council candidate John Quaglione. This morning, Quaglione urged NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) Borough Commissioner Keith Bray to put safety first and fix mislabeled and misleading directions in front of Public School 264 (371 89th Street Brooklyn, NY, 11209). Quaglione was at the corner of 89th Street and 4th Avenue -- the location of the crosswalk, which received a “Needs Improvement” grade on Quaglione’s school crossing markings survey.

“This is a commonsense issue, we all want our children and their educators to be safe walking to school,” said Quaglione. “I am calling on the DOT to assess the condition of all school crossings at the beginning of each school year. It may seem minor to City Hall, but I’m here to tell them it’s not. It's important to know your kids are safe. As the parent of two beautiful daughters, our children’s safety and education will be a priority of mine if elected to City Hall in November.”

A parent of a child who attends the school contacted John Quaglione to express his concern about the crosswalk. In response, John Quaglione conducted a survey of all the school crossings in the 43rd Council District (attached). The father and lifelong public servant pointed out the combination of improper street markings within the crosswalk. Noting too, the incorrect placement of the ‘WALK/DON’T WALK’ sign causing confusion on a daily basis.

The elementary school is located at the corner of  4th Avenue in Bay Ridge, a high-traffic avenue which leads to a highway and the Verrazano Bridge in Quaglione’s district.
